…Mes collègues canadiens et moi-même sommes invités dans des universités à la rencontre des enseignants d’art. Comme pour tout, les proportions sont colossales. Exemple : l’école des Beaux Arts de Dalian est à 50 Km du centre ville ; 4000 étudiants ! Un campus énorme et neuf. Autre campus regroupant tous les arts, de la musique à la mode … 8000 étudiants qui habitent sur place. 10 ans après son ouverture, un nouveau campus va être construit pour 10000 étudiants. La promotion immobilière joue à plein car les terrains sont de plus en plus chers. L’image des projets est évidemment plus valorisante que la rétraction économique !
Une remarque : ici on construit les villes à la campagne ! Elles sont verticales : des groupes d’immeubles de 20 étages ou plus. Les autoroutes qui les relient sont en construction et végétalisées de chaque coté - c’est la saison des lilas, il fait chaud ; la fenêtre ouverte : c’est la route parfumée !
Bref, d’une université à l’autre nous arrivons dans celle où nous devons donner une conférence. Les étudiants nous attendent dans une immense salle pleine...Atmosphère très officielle.
J’ai un problème avec la traduction : en chinois « tableau » et « peinture à l’huile » c’est le même mot, le même concept…La peinture à l’huile est quelque chose qui est importé de l’occident et qui signifie en même temps toile peinte et cadre. Le tableau est donc la somme des 3 éléments : toile ou autre support, peinture, cadre.
Pour mon histoire à raconter…C’est difficile de distinguer le tableau, sa forme ou ses formes, son volume éventuel et donc la manière de déposer la couleur etc. Mais enfin ! l’aspect structuraliste qui habite mon discours d’époque est peut-être de trop ( ici ou ailleurs !) . Le spectacle est dans les images projetées, Cela produira des résultats inattendus. Quant aux discours d’artiste …Il faut s’en méfier.
Nous sommes en voyage officiel d’échanges et au delà de la traduction des présentations convenues je parle par signes, le plus souvent en imitant ou recherchant les gestes de la manière de peindre lorsqu’’on me présente un artiste face à l’oeuvre. Il faut être juste et direct . Par exemple : il y a une catégorie qui se définit comme « peinture traditionnelle », c’est celle à l’encre, lavis, aquarelle sur papier de riz le plus souvent . Le concept est toujours « modernisation de la tradition ». Sur des formes sans contour dont on devine le geste pour les obtenir, entre des tachages violents mais subtils, se placent les figures représentées. Avec le corps, il me semble vivre moi-même la vérité de l’ espace peint, paysage idéal gesticulé évitant le symbole. Les choses étant les choses, on se comprend, on se congratule.
Evidemment je simplifie ! Pour ne pas vous ennuyer cher lecteur !

... My fellow Canadian artists and I are invited to universities to meet the art-teachers. As with anything, the proportions are colossal. Example : the School of Fine Arts in Dalian is 50 km from downtown with 4,000 students ! A huge and brand new campus. Another campus with every artforms, including music, fashion ... : 8000 students who live there ! And 10 years only after its opening, another new campus will be built, for 10,000 students. Real estate development is rampant, and the land is increasingly expensive. Such projects, when economic contraction sounds predominant, gives another vision on what's happening in China, also in the artistic world !
As a remark, the famous slogan "build cities in the country" seem to apply here ! They are true vertical cities, with groups of buildings of 20 floors or more. The highways that connect these cities are rapidly built and vegetation is developped on each side. It is the season of lilacs, and as it is hot, when one opens the window: the road is fragrant !
We navigate from one university to another, to reach the one where we will give a lecture. Students await us in a huge room, packed... very formal atmosphere.
I have a problem with the translation into Chinese, as "painting"(tableau) and "oil painting" (peinture à l'huile) is the same word, the same concept ... The oil painting is something that is imported from the West, and it means both "frame" and "canvas". The artwork is the sum of three elements : canvas or other medium, painting, frame.
Not easy with my story ! ... It's hard to distinguish the picture, its shape or form, and the potential volume, and therefore how to introduce the color..This structuralist aspects of my speech is perhaps too much (here or elsewhere ! ). China is again a place to learn to be modest. The show is in the projected images and this produces unexpected results. Speeches of artist ... One should always be careful...
It is an official travel of exchanges, and beyond the agreed translations, I use body langage and speak by signs, most often by mimicking the actions or seeking how to paint, when I am presented to one artist and his work. It is important to be fair and straightforward. For example : there is a category which is defined as "traditional painting", with ink, wash, watercolor on rice paper in most cases. The concept is to "modernize tradition". Shapes with unclear boundaries outline the action to obtain them, through violent or subtle staining. With the body, it seems that we can communicate more, on the truth of the painted space, of the ideal landscape, and avoiding symbols. Things are, and on this common acception, we understand, we congratulate.
But obviously, this is simplified: I don't want to bore you, dear reader !
