Alexander Calder
Animal sketching
Alexander Calder, Arnauld Pierre
Publisher : Editions Dilecta
' Sketching animal ' is the first book published by Alexander Calder in New York in 1926, before his departure for France.
This book, fundamental for the understanding of the work of Calder, is a study dedicated to about ten animals and their movements, illustrated by a large number of drawings. It announces the ingenious work of sculpture which he will realize in Paris the following year for 'the miniature Circus', with characters and animals in three dimensions.
This is here a fac-simile edition of this book with a presentation by Arnauld Pierre, together with its very first translation into French. All the texts collected here for the first time and reproduced as fac-simile make us discover the first avant-garde of the century, source of inspiration for Dada and the Surrealists.
Arnauld Pierre is professor in history of contemporary art at the University of Paris Sorbonne (Paris IV) and specialist of Calder. He is member of the board of the Calder Foundation.
