Perspectives

Eric Vassal workpieces are silent and sophisticated : they are balanced in a clever play of suggested desiquibrium. Decentrations are finely shaded and partake in an upper order, not of a static order, but of an animated order.  Constructions open out in a clever game of perspectives with architecture. The artist makes light out of dimensions, he makes shapes, scooping-out and plane surfaces interpenetrate, he outsmarts the direction of reading.  

Colours and shapes counterbalance themselves, they are organized in relations, reciprocity or opposition, creating a structure, where the balance of dynamic strengths is controlled with a great intelligence. The artist  gives greater importance to a deliberately succint chromatic range , blue, red, black, yellow .... 

His work is organized in two times, an intuitive stage where he draws sketches, then a second stage where he draws the final lines  with a graphite lead or a white chalk.

With sculpture gouges, he incises wood, the successive colour flat tints are laid by hand to obtain sharp shapes. He works with compasses,  drawing pens and with a system  of masks.

The workpieces are visible from different angles, in the 3 dimensional space, they cut out and structure the architectural space, a space at a human or monumental scale.  

Elements of culture and art history that works of Eric Vassal outsmart or use have to be underlined. But it has also to be remembered at the same occasion, that his workpieces may not be simplified to the different movements or attitudes which are characteristic to this history. It is important to notice that it is exactly in this way that the workpieces of the artist are set up in their contemporaneousness, in their time, in their singularity.
