« Painting is becoming closer to poetry, now that photography has freed it of the need to tell a story. » Georges Braque
The emergence of photography, now familiar and completely integrated into our daily lives, remains a highlight of the development of arts, and very recent if one considers that art history started with mankind..
As indicated by the French artist of the early twentieth century, master of cubism, photography tells a story and principally reproduces life sceneries through the camera lens. On the opposite, the artist's hand, should he be a sculptor or a painter or designer, brings us closer to poetry.
And if art probably reveals these 'limits', one of its pleasures is certainly to play around them. Painters like Hopper, or even Magritte, seem to base their work on a certain 'reality', to bring up the dream, and imagination.
Then the photographer may also be using his darkroom as a brush, to reveal light, as 'grains of matter', organized and harmoniously mastered on the sensitive surface.
This is the challenge of David Benainous. And the sensitive area is not reduced to the confined space of the film : it is the soul of the photographer who seems to be used, shots after shots.
In each of his works, the true subject is identified, 'just behind', and a filter transforms it to grasp the soul, glowing, for an ever lasting spark...
It is the perception of this fragility, fleeting, which opens a vast universe. As noted by the writer Anais Nin, 'The inner chambers of the soul are like the photographer's darkroom. We can not stay long, otherwise it becomes a cell for the neurotics."
The photographies presented actually go so much farther - be careful not to overreach ...
We admire – we discover ... What is it?
There is something exhilarating in this issue, a work that shows so much.
The reality is here - the camera is used to capture it - and David Benanious decides, in the plastic of his work, to transmit only light, on the surface. It helps us to escape out of darkness, while reminding us that it is ubiquitous, everywhere, close ...
Light coming out of darkness. Jubilation and anguish.
Explore - a great adventure !
