Méconnue car inédite et indisponible en français, la poésie surréaliste anglaise n’en est pas moins riche, fébrile et authentique. Hantée par les préparatifs de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, puis par la guerre elle-même, elle est rescapée d'une époque tourmentée. Dans son refus du définitif et du cohérent, dans son accueil de l’unique et de l’évanescent, elle témoigne, à partir de 1936, de la persistance de l’« esprit surréaliste ».

Signe de cette grande richesse, l’ouvrage comprend, outre les manifestes du groupe surréaliste en Angleterre, quelques deux cents pages de poèmes et textes (1935-1980) de Roland Penrose, David Gascoyne, Emmy Bridgwater, Ithell Colquhoun, Simon Watson Taylor, Humphrey Jennings, Toni Del Renzio et bien d’autres encore. En plus d’un dictionnaire et d’une chronologie en fin d’ouvrage, Au treizième coup de minuit rassemble environ cinquante dessins d’artistes surréalistes anglais (Desmond Morris, Ithell Colquhoun, Emmy Bridgwater, Anthony Earnshaw, John Welson, Conroy Maddox, Edith Rimmington).

Michel Remy, spécialiste d’art et de littérature modernes britanniques, est considéré comme un des meilleurs spécialistes du surréalisme en Angleterre. Fondateur des éditions Marges, il est l’auteur d’ouvrages sur David Gascoyne, Desmond Morris, et l’un des auteurs de l’Anthologie bilingue de la poésie anglaise (Paris, La Pléiade, Gallimard, 2005). Il enseigne actuellement à l’université de Nice.

Né en Angleterre en 1928, Desmond Morris est connu mondialement comme éthologue et auteur du Singe nu. Il devient membre du groupe surréaliste en Angleterre dès 1949. Il s’est également forgé une réputation internationale en tant que peintre. Sa première exposition s’est tenue en 1948, et la dernière en date aura lieu en 2008, à la Mayor Gallery (Londres) à l’occasion de son quatre-vingtième anniversaire.

We are pleased to propose to you, on a subscription basis until April 1st, the book "Au treizième coup de minuit'. This Anthology of surrealism in England, has been published, translated and prefaced by Michel Rémy. Available on March 4th 2008.

          
                                                  

Hardly published in French and therefore unavailable, English surrealist poetry desserves our best attention for its  febrility and authenticity. Haunted by the preparations for the Second World War, and then by the war itself, it is a survivor of hard times. With its attitude to question again and again and to challenge the consistency of things, works and events, with its acceptance of the unique and the evanescent, it shows, as from 1936, the persistence of the "surrealist spirit".


The book includes, in addition to the manifestoes of the surrealist group in England, two hundred pages of poems and texts (1935-1980) by Roland Penrose, David Gascoyne, Emmy Bridgwater, Ithell Colquhoun, Simon Watson Taylor, Humphrey Jennings, Toni Del Renzio and many others. You will also find a dictionary and a chronology at the end of the book, and "Au treizième coup de miniut" brings together approximately fifty drawings by English surrealist artists (Desmond Morris, Ithell Colquhoun, Emmy Bridgwater, Anthony Earnshaw, John Welson, Conroy Maddox, Rimmington Edith).

Michel Remy is an expert of modern British art and literature and is considered as one of the best specialists of surrealism in England. Founder of the "Marges" editions, he is  the author of books on David Gascoyne, Desmond Morris, and one of the authors of the bilingual anthology of English poetry (Paris, La Pléiade, Gallimard, 2005). He is currently teacher at the Nice University.

Born in England in 1928, Desmond Morris is worldwide known as ethologist and author of the Naked Monkey. He becomes member of the surrealist group in England in 1949. He also earned an international reputation as a painter. His first exhibition was held in 1948 and the most recent in 2008 will be held at the Mayor Gallery (London) on the occasion of his eightieth birthday.

- The edition on vergé paper numbered with roman figures from I to X, on 10 copies with an original gouache by Desmond Morris signed by the artist (ten different signed gouaches in total) at 430 euros instead of 500 as from April, 2nd, 2008.
